After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
